The News Thursday Night: Scared Stupid
2013
Did you know that it snows in winter? ABC World News and NBC nightly News believe snow in winter is such a big story that they lead with it tonight.
Did you know Syria’s war took dozens more lives today? Well, you’d only know that if you watched CBS Evening News. While CBS leads with Syria, I never see the story reported on NBC. ABC only does Syria after they cover the snowstorm, the Pistorious killing, the Las Vegas shooting and gas prices going up. For those of you keeping score at home, at least 53 Syrians died today, while one person was killed in the Pistorious shooting, three people lost their lives today in the Las Vegas shooting, and nobody died from higher gas prices.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu asked in last week’s New York Times if the US believes American lives have more value than others. ABC has replied with a resounding “YES!!!”
In ABC’s gas price increase story, anchor Diane Sawyer cites unnamed analysts who say 15% of price hike is due to fears of instability in the Middle East. No word on how much is due to market speculation — and why should there be? The network narrative is that the markets aren’t frightening; foreigners are frightening, especially Arabs.
CBS’s Syria coverage focuses on the fear Christians have of Islamist extremists. CBS anchor Scott Pelley even points out that there have been Christians in Syria since Christianity began 2,000 years ago. The network does not have the same sympathy for Palestinians forced from the land they have lived on since Canaan 6,000 years ago.
When NBC wants to scare Americans about them evil foreigners, they roll out reporter Andrea Mitchell. Tonight, she’s scaring us about Iran’s nuclear program. After frightening us with nonexistent nukes, Mitchell tells us Iran is not hiding their new centrifuges and they’re capping the amount of nuclear fuel they produce to stay within limits suggested by Israel. In other words, all that fear Mitchell just spewed forth is hype.
NBC investigative reporter Michael Isikoff reveals that a far-right neo-Nazi felon ran a gun store and was stockpiling weapons. This is not surprising at all. Hopefully, Isikoff will soon visit gun stores around America that offer Obama targets — or the one in Michigan that displays an Obama mask on a stuffed monkey wearing the target. Racism and hatred abound in gun stores throughout America. It’s good to see Isikoff reporting the news, but this has been going on in lots of gun stores for a very long time.
The right, even icon Ronald Reagan, was once very much for gun control. That was back when the Black Panthers were using gun laws to do their own policing. Once the Panthers went away, suddenly the white right went pro-gun. Maybe what we need is a rejuvenated Black Panther movement to scare whitey back into a anti-gun position. Maybe what’s needed is for the national news to report how gangbangers are arming themselves through loose gun and gun show laws. Maybe only insane racism will scare the white right back into sanity.
BP’s Deepwater Horizon trial started yesterday. Not that it was reported on the nightly news. The networks simply don’t have time to cover the story between BP ads. In other ad news, missing from the Pistorious killing story is any mention of the role testosterone played in the shooting. Up next on the networks, ads for testosterone.
Ironically, ABC completely ignores the ongoing rallies for a Palestinian hunger striker now in his 218th day, while reporting that US gym calorie counters may be inaccurate.
NBC reports on “mutant goldfish” in Lake Tahoe. The fish are huge and caused by “aquarium dumping.” A much larger problem is bilge dumping by boats and ships, which leads to devastating effects for the environment. But these goldfish are huge!
NBC closes by telling us that Oscar-nominated historic epics “Argo,” Zero Dark Thirty,” and “Lincoln” are not historically accurate. They all have errors that only a little bit of research would have fixed. You know, like the nightly news.
ABC ends by describing the intelligence of dolphins. There is proof dolphins are smarter than humans: they don’t watch the nightly news.
CBS closes by celebrating an Indiana high school history teacher who has turned his classroom into a museum of war relics. He even has had his students contact “hundreds” of families to find the stories behind America’s fallen soldiers. Don’t worry, the class is not anti-war. In fact, it glorifies war to the point of saying “war is what America is all about.” Please do not show this story to North Korea. All this coverage would do is reinforce North Korea’s reported desire for nukes based on their “fear” of the US.
Little of what aired tonight is news … but, sadly, it is THE news.
