Since 2003, US federal, state and local governments have put 600,000 Americans out of work. There is good news on the jobs front, kinda. American workers 55 and older are growing as a workforce. Their nest eggs, rotten from the financial crisis, are coming up way short. Not that things will be getting much better. A new study shows that by 2030 “global economic collapse” and “precipitous population decline” will take place if the world’s resources are consumed at the current pace. Luckily, the wealthiest and corporations still have places where they can hide their money tax-free. The British Conservative Party’s Minister for the Cabinet Office, Paymaster General who is a Member of Parliament believes Britain should ‘aspire to become a tax haven – a country that offers foreign individuals and businesses little or no tax liability.’ Which eurozone country will be the next to go the way of Greece? Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says Spain, “is facing an economic situation of extreme difficulty, I repeat, of extreme difficulty. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is fooling themselves.” The economies of the world threaten our way of life. Since 2005, there’s been a 25% increase of ‘justifiable killings’ in US states with weak gun controls and stand-your-ground laws. This ‘justifiable’ killing defense is what’s being used by the shooter in the Tayvon Martin case. Not that racism is unique to the US. Scotland Yard is investigating new chugs of racial abuse by police officers. Bad economic news, deadly violence, racism, they all can lead to a shorter life. So can bad health news. New research shows ‘the risk of suicide and cardiovascular death increases’ when you’re told you have cancer. If you are considering killing yourself, how about a nice swim in America’s most toxic river, the Ohio.
