Jobless Brits became unpaid stewards for a private security contractor through a government work program during the Queen’s Jubilee. Some ended up living under London Bridge during their employment. Leaders are calling for an investigation as they are “deeply concerned” about the “London Bridge incident.” Despite all the coverage of the Jubilee, here’s another story that will most likely not make the US nightly TV news shows’ celebrations of the monarchy. An anti-Jubilee party was attacked and one protester was set on fire by right wing English Defence League members. Sky News quotes a witness saying, “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I saw a couple of fights and missiles being thrown into a crowd. The EDL heavily outnumbered the other demonstrators. They looked really scared.” Israeli security is so scared of Arabs that Haaretz reports, “Israel’s Shin Bet security service has been demanding access to personal email accounts of visiting tourists with Arab names, according to the testimony of three US citizens who were interrogated at Ben Gurion Airport and subsequently refused entry into Israel in May.” Sri Lankans are scared of suspected government involvement in enforced disappearances. Sri Lankan disappearances are news again after the whereabouts of anti-government journalist and cartoonist Prageeth Ekneligoda became uncertain. Ekneligoda vanished two days before the 2010 presidential re-election of incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Seven months ago, Sri Lanka’s Attorney General Mohan Peirissaid said he believed the journalist was alive. Now, Peirissaid says he ‘has no idea’ where Ekneligoda is. China is scared of people knowing just how bad their air actually is. The Associated Press reports, “China told foreign embassies Tuesday to stop publishing their own reports on air quality in the country, escalating its objections to a popular US Embassy Twitter feed that tracks pollution in smoggy Beijing.” Here’s something that can scare nearly everyone. The New York Times reports, “Pakistan’s military said it successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable cruise missile on Tuesday, continuing a pattern of what analysts say is a regional arms buildup with a focus on India.” If Pakistan nuking up doesn’t scare you, then how about the worsening situation in Syria? The Guardian reports, “Syria has severed almost all its remaining diplomatic links with the west, declaring that … 17 diplomats from the US, UK, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany and Canada were considered ‘personae non grate’ as well as the entire Turkish mission in Damascus.” Then there’s the scare of a possible new war. Radio Free Europe & Radio Liberty are reporting, “Armenia and Azerbaijan have traded accusations of responsibility for a deadly border incident that occurred while US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Yerevan. Armenia on June 5 confirmed that five Azerbaijani soldiers were killed in shoot-outs between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, and blamed the incident on Azerbaijan.” Finally, there’s the scare that is human genetic modification. The Guardian reports, “To prevent a case of mitochondrial disease, scientists would create an embryo with genetic material from both parents and a third person acting as a donor. While gene therapy (inserting healthy genes) has been used to treat patients in the past, this marks a new level of human genetic modification, and sets a precedent by introducing genetic changes that pass down to future generations.”

That’s the Nine Circles of Hell! for Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

Chuck is going under the knife for a long-awaited ankle surgery tomorrow.
