Last Thursday, the Nine Circles! linked stories on the Israeli and Sri Lankan governments’ displeasure with human rights inquires. Now, Israel has cut their ties with the United Nations Human Rights Council for requesting an investigation into illegal settlements. (It’s not just the Israelis that upset Palestinians. Palestinians are very unhappy with the Palestinian Authority.) Like Israel, Sri Lanka has their own problems with the UN Human Rights Council, refusing to implement recommendations made by the group. Human rights investigations are not getting the attention they deserve in Israel and Sri Lanka, and a new study shows four out of five murders in Mexico go unpunished. In other violence, the newly formed South Sudan is now at war with neighbor Sudan – and it appears Somali pirates are expanding their territory. As the brutality mounts around the world, you start to wonder how close we are to the end. According to President Barack Obama, “we have more nuclear weapons than we need.” You know, the kind that could blow us all to hell. (Worldwide, the nuclear infrastructure is aging fast – even in medicine – which only partly explains why Japan’s going nuclear-free following Fukushima.) Of course, if it’s not with nuclear weapons, we can destroy the planet through climate change which may have become irreversible. We don’t realize how much damage we’ve already done, and we’re discovering that we’re doing a lot more harm every day, like the expanded reach of BP’s Gulf spill damage – news we’re betting won’t be mentioned on tonight’s BP-sponsored US national TV network news shows. As we struggle to ignore the abuses to our fellow humans as well as to our planet, spinning toward disaster, it’s good to know that those who have a predilection toward professional companionship can now watch the end of the world from the window of Canada’s newly legal bordellos.

That’s today’s Nine Circles Of Hell!
