Americans are so desperate for work in our ever-changing economy that even 50 year-olds are working for free as interns hoping to find some financial stability as they inch toward retirement. Not everyone’s doing badly. The booming stock market might not be helping those who now have to work for free, but it has led to the average take-home pay of American CEOs to jump at least 10 percent in 2011. CEOs are doing well, and investors can’t wait to profit off the down economy as well. Large investors are buying up cheap and foreclosed homes as they hope to make a new killing as landlords. (Which makes sense as the American dream of buying a house is being replaced by the American reality of renting – and it looks like they’ll be renting from the same banks that tanked the housing market.) You know who else is doing well? Military contractor Lockheed Martin’s new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will cost the US taxpayer $1.51 trillion over its lifetime. Of course, that number is likely to go up as every cost estimate on the jet has been lower than anticipated. While the US economy suffers for most of us, Europe’s also continues to erode. Europe’s unemployment rate has now hit an all-time high. As an opposite Sarah Palin might say, ‘how’s that austerity and spending cut thing working out for ya?’ While the European economy deteriorates, many are fearing other possibly scarier changes. Big Brother Britain now wants to monitor all phone calls, e-mails, text messages and Internet use of every person in the country. Big Brother’s bad enough, but the Global Post is reporting on an even more frightening European specter in their new series, ‘Echoes of Hitler.’ Why anyone would have the impression that Europe is sliding down a slippery slope toward fascism is beyond us. It’s not like France is rounding up suspected Muslim extremists and deporting them. Oh, they are? So how do fascists come to power? In Bahrain, dictatorship stays in power with help from a US Congressman.
