Before the conventional wisdom becomes that there is a ‘growing Muslim threat to Europe,’ experts say that Islamic extremism is actually waning in France. In other ‘intelligence’ news, the National Security Administration is building America’s largest spying center. Of course, the type of transparency the NSA will be seeking won’t be related to campaign contributions, like the way usurious payday lenders hide their political donations. What the US could use instead of a massive new facility to spy on its own citizens is the kind of 15-year corruption inquiry conducted in Ireland – and the Irish found plenty. (Not the best corruption story this week as that goes to how JPMorgan closed the Vatican’s hincty account.) Corruption isn’t the only thing being targeted overseas as the UN wants Sri Lanka to investigate alleged rights abuses. Sri Lanka’s not crazy about it, just like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s not nuts about a recent human rights report on Israel. While Netanyahu’s Israel may be upset, Turkey says Assad’s Syria won’t be around much longer. Not that the world needs any more reasons for violence, like the brutality we’re seeing in Syria, but it looks like future wars will be caused by water shortages, a global problem that will be solved in the same way we conquered AIDS: forgetting all about it.
