Thought you might be interested, the Easton Area School Board (PA) is considering removing Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Nickel and Dimed" from the curriculum. It is currently offered as an option for the advanced placement students.

Sat. 5/05/12 - aft. re: Sat. 05/05/12 show - Internships
Dear Chuck:
Thank you for interviewing Mr. Ross Perlin today about internships. I enjoyed and appreciated this discussion very much.
I can point you to the root of internships. It's the women's movement in the '70's which led to the glass ceiling in the '80's and from there to extremism in internships in the '90's and 2000's. Been there, done that.
When I finished a paralegal certificate program, '87, law firms didn't want to hire me in that capacity because they said I didn't have experience. They were able to hire male de-barred attorneys become glorified law clerks for that work. So I went on back into the typing pool. I didn't realize when I got out of that program I was going to bump into a glass ceiling. The good news was: my salary (and my self-confidence) as a legal secretary/administrative assistant tripled overnight. And that helped me finish off my night school Degree in communication.
When I finished my night school degree in communication and did an internship at a major local channel, the reporter I was assigned to was alcoholic, probably on drugs and occasionally violent. I believe I determined he may also have been doing something else on the side unmentionable to make ends meet. While his job had glamour, he was really only on some kind of part-time contract not all that different from when I worked as an office temp in times past. In other words, the field of communication was not romantically glamourous as I had previously been led to believe.
I had some pipe dreams of doing on-line research for a show. But after a major show of the type that interested me got cancelled and the job market started squeezing, I said to myself, "Forget it." Thanks to Social Security setting in and unemployment running out, I was able to return to activities of younger days: creative writing and fine arts. So, to hell with glamourous careers (like the kid couch crashing in New York to get into broadcasting found out).

/Sarah in Rogers Park

PS: You mentioned you're one of the "B" people. Do you know Mr. Jurek (Bill, I think his name is) down at Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind? I am a volunteer radio reader on Monday afternoons working with Brian Hawkins, the engineer at CRIS radio there and Mr. Jurek is Brian's boss. I almost went blind a couple of times in life, myself. This is why I love doing it./s-rp

dear chuck and the others,

i just finished 'The Short American Century. A Postmortem,' edited by andrew j.bacevich. it is a fascinating journey through the last fifty years, written by experts who all try on their own field to analyze what really went wrong, a meta-view so to speak. you might interview all of the contributors, all of them are qualified to be a guests in your fine show. keep on trucking chuck.

dear chuck and the other folks,

morris berman's books are fascinating. in his last book he deals with the culture of the south of the usa, which could have been an alternative to the expansionist thinking of the washington elites. thanks to you we invited james peck to the netherlands. we heard him speak in one of your programs. peck's lecture was fascinating especially now the mainstream media are preparing the west for an attack on syria and iran. thanks. keep ontrucking.

Here's a follow-up to the first story, the one on US juvenile detention center conditions.

I realize this is an old story - and even this 'new' information is nearly two weeks old, but it's worth noting when considering America's growing lockdown.

"All social progress in this country ... has come from an alliance of social democratic movements on the ground ... and a strong centralized state" (Corey Robin). This is simply incorrect. General Fremont, first Repuplican candidate for President, freed the slaves in Missouri prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. Fremon't order was reversed by Lincoln. So social progress came about DESPITE the strong centralized state, NOT AS THE RESULT OF AN ALLIANCE. I know that the ridiculing of Ron Paul is fun and easy, but he remains the ONLY CANDIDATE OF EITHER PARTY CALLING FOR A SCALING BACK OF THE US EMPIRE. And he is the ONLY CANDIDATE TO RENOUNCE LEGALIZED MURDER OF AMERICAN CITIZENS WITHOUT ARREST OR CHARGE OR TRIAL BY THE PRESIDENT. And he is the ONLY CANDIDATE TO CRITICIZE THE NDAA FOR ITS TRASHING OF CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. Your continued ridicule approaches bullying. I hope dear Ron doesn't jump off a bridge, because then you would feel bad, Chuck.

If I could post a link I would, but I'm not technically savoy much like "thunderballs".

Unbelievable...Sago Mine misreporter Vandenbrook strikes again! he got a bunch of quotes from Senators and Congressman in order to defame a family when he knew all along that it wasnt true. Unbelievable...Vandenbrook and Locker should change their names to Jayson Blair!! Tom knew the facts and just chose to attack a family serving the U.S military by intentionally refusing to look at/for the fact of the matter which was wasn't very hard after a google search I came across this site www.govexec.com/federal-news/fedblog/2012/03/contractor-says-taxes-being-paid/41447/ Where there is a link to a letter with comments from Clark Ervin, the former Inspector General on behalf of Leonie Industries explaining the facts that Tom and Ray just seem to "Pass Up" ??

Unbelievable…Sago Mine misreporter Vandenbrook strikes again! he got a bunch of quotes from Senators and Congressman in order to defame a family when he knew all along that it wasnt true. Unbelievable…Vandenbrook and Locker should change their names to Jayson Blair!! Tom knew the facts and just chose to attack a family serving the U.S military by intentionally refusing to look at/for the fact of the matter which was wasn’t very hard after a google search I came across this site http://www.govexec.com/federal-news/fedblog/2012/03/contractor-says-taxes-being-paid/41447/ Where there is a link to a letter with comments from Clark Ervin, the former Inspector General on behalf of Leonie Industries explaining the facts that Tom and Ray just seem to “Pass Up” ??
