Your bitter blind broke gap-toothed radio show host Chuck Mertz interviewed …

live from London, economist, author, journalist and political analyst Loretta Napoleoni, author of “Maonomics: Why Chinese Communists Make Better Capitalists than We do” (Seven Stories). Loretta has been on the show in the past to discuss her books, “Rogue Economics: Capitalism’s New Reality,” which has been translated into fourteen languages, and “Terror Inc.: Tracing the Money Behind Global Terrorism,” which has been translated into twelve languages. She’s one of the world’s leading experts on money laundering and terror financing. She has worked as London correspondent and columnist for Turin’s La Stampa, Milan’s Corriere della Sera, Rome’s La Repubblica, Spain’s national daily El País, and Le Monde. Loretta has also worked as a consultant for the commodities markets.

Geoff Dembicki reports extensively on the growing political influence of Alberta’s oil sands industry and other climate change-related issues for TheTyee.ca, an award-winning online newspaper based in Vancouver, Canada. His recent writing includes a special article for Corpwatch, “Keystone Pipeline Faces Indigenous Trans-Border Opposition.”

Brennan Center Senior Counsel Keesha Gaskins will be on to discuss the Center’s new report, “Voting Law Changes in 2012.” The report says new Republican-backed voting changes, “could make it significantly harder for more than five million eligible voters to cast ballots in 2012.” Keesha assisted with researching and drafting multiple sections of this report, and is a senior attorney at the Center and an expert on voting rights issues.

live from Paris, Financial Times columnist and feature writer Simon Kuper, author of, “Soccer Men: Profiles of the Rogues, Geniuses and Neurotics Who Dominate the World’s Most Popular Sport” (Nation Books). Simon’s 1994, “Soccer Against the Enemy: How the World’s Most Popular Sport Starts and Fuels Revolutions and Keeps Dictators in Power,” won the 1994 William Hall Sports Book of the Year.

Our irregular correspondents were:

live from the #OccupyWallStreet action in Chicago, Spencer ‘Thunderball’ Thayer
live from Los Angeles, Jeff Dorchen will deliver a Moment of Truth.

 <itunes:summary>Rough transcrip:
So as I write this some moron is singing the national anthem at the Uptown Rib Fest just a few blocks away and the smell of dead pig marinated in sugar is wafting into my room. So I apologize if I am a little more harsh on Mr. Bugliosi than I probably should be, but to be fair, he has it coming.
On June 11th Vincent Bugliosi was interviewed on This Is Hell regarding his recently released book The Divinity of Doubt. Now I respect Bugliosi for his work on The Prosecution of George W Bush for Murder so I don’t want to entirely attack his credibility as a lawyer. But his insistence that, since he is a seasoned trial lawyer he should be listened to as an authority concerning the question of God is total bull.
He argues that because of his profession he has a special affinity for creating sounds conclusions based on “common sense.” When I hear someone found an argument on “common sense” I tend to immediately turn skeptical since it is a term used by con-artists and the lazy to mean commons superstition. It’s used as the basis anytime anyone doesn’t want to justify a deeply held belief.
In Bulgiosi’s case, it’s no different. When he says common sense he really means to say, “what looks right to me, even though I am woefully under-qualified to make this judgement and have no desire to fact check anything I am saying.”
Is that harsh? Maybe… But then again you, probably haven’t read the book.
Now before you jump to conclusions, no.
I wasn’t offended by Bugliosi’s ham-handed attacked on Theism or Atheism. I haven’t been offended
by anything since the Nixon administration so I DO NOT have some axe to grind because this book hurt
my delicate sensibilities concerning faith or lack there of.I’m pissed, because his lazy use of philosophy wrapped in an undeserving self-riotous tone may give Agnosticism a bad name. That kinda worries me.
But ultimately, I think this book too terrible to be a serious threat. Or at least I hope. Most forms of Agnosticism are, in my opinion, a fairly sensible solutions to the otherwise irrelevant problem of God’s existence.
Granted, I think it is sometimes a little silly to acknowledge the legitimacy of some of these creator God’s but at least Agnostics are not the “New Athiests.”
The “New Athiests” and the Christian Apologists wants to shove their opinions on such an irrelevant issue down our throats and to hell with anyone who disagrees or has better things to do.
Bugliosi’s take on Agnosticism is pretty much the same. He has the arrogance of Christopher Hitchens and the silliness of Phillip E. Johnson (the father of intelligent design). I resented it when Dawkins started doing this to Atheism and I know, moderate Christians resent Fundamentalists so the last thing I want to see is a decent opinion like Agnosticism dragged through the dirt because of Bugliosi’s arrogance.
I think I should mention that this rage isn’t because I am an Agnostic. When people ask I tell them I am an Athiest but that’s only because I know I’m not likely going to get into a discussion on epistemology or cognitivism. So I just give the old, “God is dead,” salute and try to move on.
In actuality, I am an I-G-nostic or what I’ll sometimes call, ”Super Atheist.” Of course serious scholars don’t call it that. But I like the way it sounds.
It is actually a rather complicated, philosophy of doubt and rarely do I get a chance to talk about it to thousands of people so indulge me for a moment.
Theistism, Agnosticism and even Atheism ALL make the mistake of assuming that the concept of God is actually an expressible or thinkable proposition. This is because theological positions assume hidden undefined incoherent concepts t0 be true about God when referring to God.
In other-words we make crap up. Like what does omni-present [...]</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>Rough transcrip:
One of my favorite parts of being a Copwatcher and a member of the National Lawyers Guild is a class I get to teach called “Know Your Rights.”*
It’s great. I get to meet lots of people, learn from their experiences and generally get to blow their freakin minds… Seriously.
You would be surprised how utterly ignorant the American people are regarding our Rights. When comes to dealing with the police we’re about as informed as Glenn Beck is about anything.
That is why we teach these classes. Because the more you know about your rights the less you need organizations like Copwatch.
At the end of class people feel like they are walking away, a little more empowered. Armed with new information that one day may help them against an injustice.
But not all of it is new to people. There is one civil right all Americans have down pat.
To quote Janine from Ghostbusters* during that scene when Peck barges into the firehouse hell-bent on shuting down the generators, [NERD VOICE] “OOH NO! I’ve seen TV, I know you can’t come in here without a warrant or a writ or something.”
Yeah that’s right! You tell them oddly attractive nerd from an 80′s classic. We want to see the WARRANT!
Its importance is embedded into our subconscious. Anytime you watch a cop show, or read about the police there is that inevitable reference to a warrant.
Yup, the Fourth Amendment sure is pivotal to American values. Too bad that’s all over thanks to Justice Samuel Alito. Yup, every-one’s favorite fascist vampire is making America safe for warrant-less fun.
This Monday the Supreme Court ruled on Kentucky v. King* where they decided that Police were within their right to enter a home without a warrant because they smelled marijuana.
The cops broke down Hollis King’s apartment door because after smelling the ganja bud they claim they heard an attempt to destroy the evidence.
Writing for the majority, Samuel Alito claimed that Americans still have the Fourth Amendment but, [IN VAMPIRE VOICE] “occupants who choose not to stand on their constitutional rights and instead elect… to destroy evidence have only themselves to blame.”*
[What a self-righteous prick.]
What this essentially means is that the Police can now Knock N’ Listen. Claim they heard something illegal and then break down your door. And the kicker is that they can now get away with it, LEGALLY. That’s the only real change here. It’s legal.
That pesky Fourth Amendment has been making it more difficult for the police to get away with this kind of thing for decades. But in truth it has never stopped them then and it certainly cannot stop them now.
The cops have always had a habit of break in first ask questions about due process later. It just depends on the case but these types of incidents do not always fall in favor of the suspect or justice.
When the NYPD raided the home of one of Rebel Diaz rappers. They tore his place apart, confiscated some music and broke his computer.
The justification for this entry was that the door was unlocked. He couldn’t prove his case and there were no charges filed. Sucks. Fourth Amendment FAIL.
Other times the Fourth can protect us even when we are committing a crime.
The King case totally reminded me of this time when I was at a punk house hanging with some friends. An officer knocked on the door because he heard noise and smelled weed.
We asked for a warrant and when he could not produce one we refused the officer entry.
We then proceeded to taunt him mercilessly making all sorts of references to his inability to (COUGH) perform his duty. Let’s say…
[We made fun of his penis.]
Eventually he left claiming he would return with a warrant which never came and nothing ever happened.
It makes for a great story to share in class. But I always make a note that though the story is hilarious it isn’t a good example of the Four[...]</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>Rough transcrip:
So, I have a confession to make. Not the kind you tell a Priest in a confessional, but the one you tell your lawyer when you’re in an holding cell.My lawyer advises me that it’s not a good idea to confess to a crime- on an international radio show, but I’m not one for good ideas and I really want to get caught.
I need to get caught, because apparently, I’m a danger to society. You see, I’m a habitual criminal.
Every week I un-apologetically commit two or three federal crimes. In fact I’m doing it right now, as I record this segment.
I have just made you, the This Is Hell listening audience, an accessory to a crime.
And it isn’t a wimpy crimes either, you know- armed robbery, conspiracy or espionage…
No, it’s one of those crimes that’ll even make an Officer squirm.
Just browse the Chicago police blogs and you’ll see a bunch of cops – and wanna-be cops – agonizing over the dangerous implications if this crime.
And they’re not worrying because lives are at stake, instead they worry about this hurting their chances for promotion and the legitimacy of police in general.
Of course I’m talking about video taping the police. Or more specifically observing an on duty office with an audio/video device.
THAT’S IT! THAT’S THE CRIME- RECORDING THE POLICE!
And that’s the crime I am making you an accessory to. I’m Downtown at State and Madison observing an Officer and if you listen closely you may hear him.
You wouldn’t think something so harmless is against the law, but it is.
Thanks to a 1994 revision to the Illinois Eavesdropping Act, It makes it illegal for a civilian to record an officer while on duty. Even if they are recording you.
See in Illinois, an audio device cannot be used to record or overhear a conversation without the consent of all parties.
Basically that means you can’t record something without everyone agreeing to it.
It’s even not okay to record audio in public where no expectation of privacy exists!
So if you’re walking on a public street- saying stuff that’s embarrassing or offensive- and it gets posted on YouTube, that’s illegal.
So why does exactly that happen so often? Well if you’re not a cop, you’re out of luck.
It’s an almost unenforceable law.
So the only time it IS enforced is when it benefits, you guessed it, THE LAW.
In fact that 1994 provision I mentioned early increased the severity of recording an officer from a Class 4 to 1 Felony! That’s 4 to 15 years in prison!
So what if, the infamous execution style shooting of Oscar Grant had been filmed, let’s say, in Chicago instead of Oakland.
Instead of being a hero, who brought down an out of control cop- the young girl who tape that tragedy could have been charged with a felony.
Even though Grant was shot on a public transit platform- in-front of hundreds of eye witnesses. In Illinois that wouldn’t have exempted the her from federal prosecution.
And that it exactly how Criminal Evasdropping is used in the real world. It helps protect the police from accountability. That’s the reason why the CPD covets it so much.
Don’t just take my word for it. Mark Donahue, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said that decriminalization, “could potentially inhibit an officer from proactively doing his job.”
Hmm, interesting. BUT what does that mean?
To understand the realities of “doing his job,” you have to understand that the police are allowed to lie, intimidate, offend- and verbally bully you to get the job done.
Meaning, that if a cop needs to threaten you with an illegal arrest- even if you haven’t done anything- that’s right as rain.
Because maybe, you’ll be so scared- you’ll give up the name of your dealer. Or you could incriminate yourself and maybe even a friend you didn’t even know was invo[...]</itunes:summary>
